Ko te Whakakitenga

We work to employ tikanga post-sentence restorative justice practices of hohou i te rongo to ensure the impacts of offending are acknowledged and responded to and the affected parties are given the opportunity to heal and have their mana uplifted and restored.

Hei Tatau Pounamu uses a bespoke referral database system called Pūkete. The database keeps all referral records safe and confidential, and ensures that all referral details are kept in one secure location. Referrals are entered into Pūkete automatically through submission of the Referral Form (below). The referral is allocated to the appropriate facilitators by the Operations Co-Ordinator. Facilitators can navigate their referrals through the system, adding case notes, conference details as they go and secure messages to their co-facilitator regarding the referral. The dashboard takes facilitators through from the initial facilitator allocation, to pre-conferences, conference and finally the restorative justice report writing, which enables detailed restorative justice outcome reports to be sent to the involved parties.

    Helen brings years of experiences to the hohou te rongo mahi. She teaches, writes and guides facilitators and believes a tikanga driven process is the only way to make the process meaningful for tangata mamae and tangata hara and their whanau.

    Tere works for people first and foremost. He is steeped in tikanga and goodwill towards hohou te rongo. He guides the tikanga in our process which means we are in safe hands.

Ko te Uaratanga / Our Mission Statement

We will look to employ tikanga-based practices of hohou I te rongo (post-sentence restorative justice) to ensure the impacts of offending are acknowledged and addressed, and affected parties are provided the opportunity to heal and have their mana uplifted and restored.

  • We are of the view that the only way to make sustainable change for tangata hara is to have the whānau, hapū, and iwi present in any solution. The process involves community elders in a tikanga-led restorative panel process prior to release and then a tikanga-led restorative hui with victim’s and offender’s whānau. Plus, apologising on the marae in the presence of victims, their whānau, offender’s whānau and their ancestors, actualises a full accounting for what harm has been done.

    We have support from Ngāti Whatua, Whanau Ora, Victim Support and a Memorandum of Understanding with Te Pa and with Auckland Restorative Justice Trust. We have also consulted with prison directors, staff and chaplains who offer their support for this project.
